Gannon Beehive Buzzes With Shared Resources

Published: 29-Mar-2019

The Northwest Pennsylvania Innovation Beehive Network was established as a resource for aspiring entrepreneurs in the region.  At Gannon University’s Business Innovation Beehive, the local economy benefits from the expertise of a staff of students who bring diverse talents gathered from around the world. The Beehive team of students, who hail from three continents, bring a unique perspective along with an array of talent and creativity.

Zarko Sadikovic, a senior double major in entrepreneurship and marketing is a native of Serbia and lived in Germany. It’s little wonder that he has worked on Beehive client projects as diverse as packaging design to financial projections.

“In the classroom you learn about theory, but in the Beehive, I work with real people and real businesses.  Every day I learn something new about a different product or service, business or market,” he said.

Collaborating with Gannon University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Beehive students assist clients with research, business plan writing and marketing materials.  Beehive clients also have the opportunity to take advantage of academic expertise by participating in class projects such as marketing strategic plans and feasibility studies.

Maggie Horne, director of Gannon SBDC, has a foot in the academic world and the economic development ecosystem. One of her classes is at work on projects for five organizations, both for-profit and nonprofit, as part of the curriculum.

“In my various capacities, I am fortunate to offer opportunities for both clients and students,” she stated, “It is a win/win situation with students gaining knowledge and experience while entrepreneurs benefit from access to invaluable resources."

Housed in the Center for Business Ingenuity (CBI), the Beehive is the most recent entity to join Gannon’s Dahlkemper School of Business, Erie Technology Incubator (ETI) and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to create an ideal place for entrepreneurs to access unmatched resources essential to a successful venture.
